The Palestinian artist Karim Shaheen was caught up in a series of wars as a child: with his parents and siblings, he fled from the First Gulf War to Kuwait, where the Second Gulf War broke out just a few years later. He experienced a third war in the former Yugoslavia, where the family had moved to be with relatives. At some point, Karim started questioning himself: “Am I a war maker?”

Husam Abed is a theatre-maker whose autobiographical performance entitled »The Smooth Life« left a mark as one of the highlights of the 2017 edition of Theater der Dinge. He got to know Karim Shaheen during their time spent together in Yarmouk Camp in the Syrian capital of Damascus. In his latest work, Abed makes use of objects, video and live music to trace a life story marked by continuous exile and migration: after further stops in Russia, Ukraine, Romania and Hungary, Karim finally arrived in the country that he dreamed of as a child – the USA.
