An opera house and a football stadium – two overambitious projects situated right in the middle of the rainforest. »Teatro Amazonas« and the »Arena da Amazônia« can both be found in Manaus; one was built at the end of the 19th century using proceeds from the rubber boom, while the other was constructed for the 2014 World Cup. Based on numerous interviews and multiple pieces of research material, the Chilean-Catalan duo of Laida Azkona Goñi and Txalo Toloza-Fernández have put together a packed documentary theatre play about the greed of the local bourgeoisie and global companies, as well as the way in which economic, cultural and political interests have interacted, resulting in the destruction of one of the most important natural regions in the world, and various atrocities and ongoing violence committed against the indigenous population.

»Teatro Amazonas« is the third part of the trilogy »Pacifico«, in which Azkona & Toloza look at the impact of colonialism on ecological contexts in Central and South America.

Notes on accessibility: Information about the accessibility of the venue in structural terms can be found here.
The production addresses colonialism, racism and experiences of violence.
