Europe in the Late Middle Ages: no one knows exactly what happens during conception, but the women have the situation well under control. A control that evades the patriarchal regime. Female knowledge into which men have no insight is an unacceptable condition for the secular and spiritual authority. At the end of the day, the church still determines what is knowledge and what is allowed to be practiced. According to the Malleus Maleficarum, “no one damages the Catholic faith more than the midwives”. But resistance rages in the belly. The uterus balls its fists…
The Hamburg-based director, scenographer and puppet maker Cora Sachs used a #TakeCare residency at the beginning of 2021 to examine birth as a political act and conducted research into historical source material on the power politics surrounding conception, pregnancy and birth. From this, she has developed the trilogy Anatomy of Good Hope in the first half of 2023 and is dealing with the battlefield of the body on which and with which politics are made. This first part can now be seen at Figure It Out.
