Robot-ballet
Ugo Dehaes‘ robots are special dancers: some of them crawl across the table like caterpillars, others stumble around through the area like puppies, still others turn themselves flexibly in all directions and some simply repeat the same movement over and over again, monotonously.
Simple Machines tells the story of an artist who wants to get rid of himself. He leaves the stage to the unique physical possibilities of the machines and the choreographic abilities of artificial intelligence. In so doing, Ugo Dehaes has created a very playful robot ballet that asks us how we would like to deal with the digital transformation in a humorous and picturesque way.
In his works, the choreographer Ugo Dehaes demonstrates his interest in the visual and mechanical aspects of the human physique, for physical work and for topics that are related to the natural sciences. He has concentrated on object choreography since 2018 and has developed several dance pieces with robots. He has already been invited to perform Simple Machines at a variety of international figure and object theater festivals.
A note about accessibility: You can find information about the physical accessibility of the performance venue here. The audience will sit relatively closely together around a table with Ugo Dehaes in two rows. An interaction with the objects is possible in part. Some robots are reminiscent of caterpillars, spiders, insects, parts of the human skeleton or human organs. Some of them are very fast and move around a lot. Some objects look like slimy cocoons. Dark blue light is used in a longer sequence of the performance. The motors of the robots make whirring noises.
