The musical style rebetiko was created between the two worlds war on the outskirts of Greek metropolises in which displaced people from Asia Minor on the search for a better life had been crowded. In the connection between Greek folk music and the Ottoman music tradition, rebetiko, which has its roots in nightlife, deals with the hard living realities of marginalized urban subculture. It became the companion of the people who had been forced to leave their homelands.

The director and puppeteer Yiorgos Karakantzas and the writer and screenwriter Panayotis Evangelidis have developed a sensitive and highly visual narrative about the so-called “Asia Minor Catastrophe”, the murder and displacement of over a million Greek Orthodox inhabitants of the Ottoman Empire as part of the joint forced relocations between Greece and Turkey. Using a surprising performance technique where intense video images are created by performing horizontally with puppets, Rebetiko creates of a space of resonance for contemporary uprooting on the basis of historical experiences of violence and displacement.
