Who are we? What determines our identity? Is it our self-perception and self-definition? Or is it the view of others and society’s view of ourselves?

Hero is an examination of and playful exploration of the most diverse facets of a personality. Tibo Gebert starts from his own queer biography with its coming outs and transformations. He overlays it with the myth of superheroes in order to encounter split-off identities in the play on stage. No one knows what is concealed behind a mask or what it is hidden underneath a costume. There is only a guess, a possible trail, an assumption of experiences and events.

In his many years of artistic work, Tibo Gebert has developed an individual language for the stage that is distinguished by secretive worlds of images, minimalism and a precise performative gestural vocabulary. In doing so, he plays with the perceptions of the audience and transforms the apparent “almost nothing” from one moment to the next into an intense experience. His newest production, Hero, is a powerfully visual reflection on becoming visible as well as the invisible.

Within the scope of a #TakeCare residency at Schaubude Berlin in December 2020 and January 2021, Tibo Gebert conducted research into puppet making has significantly influenced the performance aesthetic of the production Hero.

A note about accessibility: this production will include dark lighting cues and moments of complete darkness. You can find information about the physical accessibility of the performance venue here.
