In “Kaffee mit Zucker?” the two materials, coffee and sugar, appropriate the stage in their various aggregate states. Based on these, we negotiate German immigration history in Central America and its colonial continuity. From coffee beans and candyfloss, from biographical material and historical sources, from video fragments and live music, a visually stunning, solid and sensual production ensues.

The performer Laia RiCa grew up in El Salvador and Germany. At the German school in San Salvador, she was able to experience for herself how enduring the colonial habitus remains in the present. She brings this experience into the play as well as her own experience of being in between: the struggle with two worlds, the constant suspicion of betrayal of “roots”, the questioning of feelings of inferiority and superiority and the open question of what to do with the knowledge of global injustice.
