To bear witness
Documentary Object Theatre · in German spoken language (with English surtitles available on request) · 45 minutes · suitable for ages 9 and up, including adults

Last year, together with puppeteer Josephine Hock, we premiered the production To Bear Witness. The work is based on the biography of Irene Grumach-Shirun, who survived the Nazi dictatorship in Berlin as a Jewish child. This period of her life is told from the perspective of her teddy bear.

Bärchen, or Bär to his buddies, is a teddy bear and is more than 100 years old. His eyes have already seen a whole lot of things. He has already seen very beautiful and very awful moments, for example, when the walls shook because of the bombs. Or when Irene’s grandmother was deported. Up until now, Bär has preferred to avoid these memories. Now, together with us, he enters that have been closed up for a very long time, where important parts of his biography are brought back to life with shadow play and sound.

“Even though this piece deals with heavy subject matter—air raids are described, the grandmother’s deportation is portrayed—there is always the Bear, who makes even the worst fate bearable.
That is the great strength of this production: that it does not shy away from the dramatic events, yet manages not to traumatize the audience in a lasting way.”

¡ca-ra-zy! Attempts at chaos, flies and machines
Object and material theatre performance with sound collages · Duration: 45 minutes · Minimal spoken language · For ages 4 and up

The production ¡ca-ra-zy! explores various attempts to approach the child’s perspective in the moment of performance and to find an artistic translation for it.

“TUKI Bühne presents the process of creating children’s theatre as a collaborative endeavor between preschool children and theatre makers:
Over six to eight months, an artistic team accompanies the children’s aesthetic and exploratory questions and movements in their preschools, draws inspiration from their creative ideas, and uses this material to develop performances for young audiences.” (Source: tuki-berlin.de)

I dream of this machine, made up of many small parts that work together.
Is there a blueprint for insects? Are insects also machines?
How many parts emerge when something breaks? Can I reinvent something out of broken things?
With little dialogue, versatile materials, moving images, live drawings and sound, two performers examine the crazy chaos of the insect world.
