Geisterhaus (Haunted House)

For the five-day period of the festival, Schaubude Berlin will be transformed into a haunted house! We invite the audience to join us on a parkour through the entire theater: the six works commissioned from Berlin-based artists move fluidly along the borders between performance and installation and search for the ghosts of our times in six individually designed experiential spaces. In small groups, the members of the audience experience intensive encounters and surprising moments in which the boundaries between subject and object become blurred and the relationship between human beings and their environment is called into question anew.
Tactile tour: on November 9 at 17:30 as well as November 10 at 16:00, we will offer a tacile tour through the performative exhibition with an audio description. In order to take part, please register by November 8 at 12pm by sending an email to ticket@schaubude.berlin
Information About Accessibility: You can find information about the physical accessibility of the performance venue here. The members of the audience will move throughout the entire building in small groups. The performance locations of the works Schule der Puppen (School of the Puppets) and Dressing Room are only accessible by means of stairs and one staircase is somewhat steeper. In order to reach the performance location of Pas de Ghost, one step has to be traversed. For the most part, there are no places to sit available and the audience will be packed in more closely together in some of the performance locations. The members of the audience will be invited to take part in interactions at some parts of the installation.
Geisterhaus is a production of Schaubude Berlin with works that have been commissioned from Neïtah Janzing, the KMZ Kollectiv, Macromatter, Naoko Tanaka, Theater Textura and Guests and theatreworks.

Using sewing equipment passed down from her grandmothers, Robin redesigns the costumes they made together in her youth. Each stitch honors her familial matriarchs while communing with the ghosts of the characters she once portrayed. This journey of remembrance and creation allows Robin to connect with her past while shaping the woman she aspires to become. Dressingroom is an intimate meditation on identity, legacy, transformation, and the playful power of dress up to imagine one’s way in the world.

I am your shadow, your doppelganger, your dark duplicate. I show you the silhouette of your dance, which is reflected in the fall of the folds of the light. Recognize yourself in the viewing of yourself as illusion or truth.
In Pas de Ghost, the shadows of the bodies of puppets have their say. In the light of a candelabra, they show themselves fragmented in a row and standing in for the human in the body of a puppet. This performative installation deals with questions of the post-Enlightenment era on the borders of the supernatural and reality.

Atif Mohammed Nour Hussein has developed a participatory experiment for Geisterhaus: In Schule der Puppen, the visitors experience what it means to see the world through puppets and how a symbiotic relationship between humans and objects can come into being.

Hands. Hand that morphs, that increase in size and that become distorted. Hands that multiply and take over the room. Hands that dangle. Menacing. Above people and heads. The hands that create, shape and destroy. Arms, faceless, that express fear or love or surprise. Sometimes they also plead for help…are the hands pleading for help? Or is it greed?
In Neïtah Janzing’s contribution to Geisterhaus, the audience becomes part of a poetic ritual under supernatural and inhuman hands.

How can one approach the interior of the forest? Possibly through the state of sleep? Could one possibly even live among the collective dreams of the plants and insects?
Naoko Tanaka researches these questions as an artistic experiment. For Geisterhaus, she has created a space of ideas: Here, the “consciousness” of the non-human creatures takes over the empty theater auditorium and develops an artistic language from the dreams of the forest. Oscillating between the conditions of being awake and sleep, light and shadows, material and energy, a fantasized perspective unfolds as an installation-based arrangement.

Since the beginning of the sanctions as a result of the war in Ukraine, coal from Latin America has been in demand like never before. The imports from Colombia have increased by nearly two thirds. But what exactly is being mined there and transported to Germany?
The KMZ Kollektiv asks which worlds and cosmologies are being endangered by fossil and green extractivism. In Warm wie die Kohle, four artists explore their understanding of spirituality: in their contribution to Geisterhaus, they share their rituals and their connections to the ghosts that exist in their lives.
