#BerlinIstKultur – Kulturabbau verhindern

On October 16, we called for action with the #BerlinIstKultur campaign and, together with all cultural actors, urged Berlin’s politicians to avert the announced 10% cuts to Berlin’s cultural budget.

“We at Schaubude Berlin are directly affected by the 15% cuts announced for our parent organization, Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH. Cuts of this magnitude would irreparably damage our structure as an internationally-oriented production house, and we would no longer be able to fulfill our role as a key institution for free puppet and object theater in Berlin.” – Tim Sandweg, Artistic Director of Schaubude Berlin.

Institutions and independent artists are already under immense pressure due to inflation; with the proposed cuts, irreparable damage will occur, leading to the destruction of structures, the migration of creative minds, and a significant reduction in the offerings of our theater as well as others.

This is not only an economic mistake that endangers one of Berlin’s most important industries—and the livelihood of over 150,000 Berliners working in the cultural sector. It is also a blow to our mission to serve as places of diversity and openness, enabling societal negotiation and dialogue. We hope for your support: Sign the petition of the German Stage Association and help us make it clear to the members of parliament that culture is the heart of our city.
